ANCO shake tables are named in honor of Raumoko (also known as Ruaumoko), the Maori earthquake god. ANCO finds this explanation somewhat consistent with the elastic rebound theory of earthquake causation.
Raumoko is the unborn son of Papi, the earth goddess and Raki, the sun god. According to Maori mythology, Raumoko’s birth struggles shake his mother, causing earthquakes.
Our shake table models begin with the letter ‘R’, referring to Raumoko, in their naming convention.
